Implants are a permanent solution and feel just like your natural teeth. They can also help prevent bone density loss in your jaw. However, implants aren’t right for everyone. What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a synthetic tooth root made of titanium in the shape of a post. We surgically place the implant into your jawbone, where it can provide support for a replacement tooth, bridge, or even dentures. Implants used to support bridges or dentures typically require a few strategically placed implants.

Dental Implants Vs. Removable Dentures or a Bridge

One benefit of dental implants over traditional dentures or a bridge is that they are fixed to the bone. That results in better stability, making it easier to eat and smile with confidence. Patients with removable dentures also sometimes experience gum irritation.

Implants give a natural look and a strong bite force. They also last a lifetime, whereas dentures and bridges often require replacement within a decade. Even better, dental implants stimulate bone growth in your jaw the same way that your natural teeth do, which helps prevent bone loss.

Implant Site Preparation

Bone density loss can be a significant problem in those who are missing teeth or have gum disease. Unfortunately, that bone loss often occurs to some degree before we can place an implant. Depending on the condition of your jawbone, you may need a bone graft.

We use autogenous bone grafting, which involves taking bone material from one part of your body and implanting it in the area with density loss. We often use bone from your chin or where your wisdom teeth used to be, but we can also take material from your hip or tibia.

Sinus Lift Augmentation

Sometimes the loss of upper back teeth allows the sinus cavity to drop down and enlarge. To place dental implants, we’ll need to move the sinus cavity back to its original position and hold it in place with a bone graft. It will take 9 to 12 months for the graft to heal.

Computer-Enhanced Treatment Planning

Dental technology is continually evolving. At Kids & Family Dentistry, we stay on the cutting-edge of dental technology to ensure we can continue to offer the best dental implants in New Jersey. Computer-enhanced treatment planning is just one of those advancements.

With this software, we can evaluate your dental CT scan in three dimensions to determine the quality of the bone at the implant site and the best approach for the procedure. This information also helps us work with your restorative dentist to design a better implant.

Preparing for Your Dental Implant

Because you’ll be given anesthesia during the procedure, we ask that you don’t eat or drink anything for 8 hours before your dental surgery. You’ll also need someone to drive you home afterward.

Beyond that, there’s no special preparation for a dental implant in most circumstances. Our team will go over any additional information specific to your procedure along with pain-management options for after the surgery prior to your appointment. You may have minor swelling and bleeding.

Aftercare

Depending on what anesthesia we use, you may need to rest the remainder of the day. The implants will bond with your jawbone over the next few months. Be sure to brush and floss your teeth daily and keep up with regular exams and teeth cleanings. Poor oral care can affect your implants and your remaining natural teeth.
